Blew the transmission drum, what else should I upgrade

I just blew the classical transmission drum on my 4.4. It has about 100k miles on it.

I wanted to repair the tranny but I would not like to spend too much (probably not the best strategy but I already bought and installed another tranny so this will only be a back up transmission).

Should I buy a whole kit with a drum (cost about $500), just a drum ($100) with some friction plates ($???) or are there other parts I should be looking into replacing. Are the ebay kit something to go for or should I buy it some place else?

Appreciate all comments guys, thanks.

I should get the proper ZF seal & gasket kit and just replace the friction plates needed.

Was your 5HP24 built pre-November 2000? (i.e. an earlier serial number than 355863). Transmissions built after that date had the stiffened drum.

Strongly recommend that you replace the axial bearing between the B-clutch hub & the C-clutch drum.

I would also consider having the torque converter reconditioned while the transmission is out as the lock-up clutch tends to start to judder above 100k miles through wear.

Thanks so much Phil. My car was build in 12/99 so it has the old drum (have not looked at it).

What is the best place to buy the parts you recommend, is this a good deal:
ZF Transmission Overhaul Gasket Set Rebuild Kit 5HP24 5HP24A Seal Rings Seals | eBay

Also, should I just look at the friction plates for signs of wear.

You can easily find the official repair manual for the 5HP24 online e.g. http://www.all-trans.by/assets/site/files/5HP24E.PDF

I’m in the UK so I don’t know who the best US parts suppliers are but CTSC and Eriksson are certainly a couple of well-known ones :

Thanks again Phil, much appreciated.

The axial bearing you mention, is it also known as a Needle bearing 5HP22 ?

found this at ctsc; Needle bearing 5HP24: The CTSC - ZF Parts

Yes, that’s the right bearing in your CTSC link – the ZF part number is 1058 202 016.

The ZF part list for the 5HP24 is here : http://www.zf.com/media/media/document/int_print_catalogs_documents/usa_4/5HP24.pdf

The 4.4 E53 uses the ‘029’ transmission and the 4.6is E53 uses the ‘034’ model.
