Sunroof clicking

First off, I would like to say Hello as this is my first post here . I am a long time E46 fanatics and bimmerfest user. I havent been able to find my answer on either of those forums,so I figured I would ask here. I bought my wife a one owner ( middle aged woman) 2005 X5 3.0 with sport ,premium, and cold weather packages with 90 k miles . Truck is beautiful except one thing. The sunroof (panoramic) makes a clicking sound when i press the up button. It is in the closed position with the sunroof screen in the open position. Has anybody had a similar problem? I have searched on all of the forums and only found the back wouldn't work, it only opened vertically, ect. When I press the button it almost sounds like a plastic gear or something is stripped .. Thanks in advance .. Hollywood..

I have already changed all of the suspension bushings, cooling system, trans filter/fluid,brake fluid flush,front/rear diff fluid, and transfer case fluid flush. This sunroof thing is driving me nuts ..

The track needs to be cleaned and lubed annually.

Has it been done?

If the panels especially the rear panel doesn't lift when you push the switch into the vent mode...then its probably the very common failure issue that should be easy to find by (google searching) about the BMW X5 pano sunroof.

I haven't had the issue (knock on wood) but do recall reading threads about the rear panel not venting upward or getting stuck in the upward position...with the discussion turning to how to close or disconnect the rear panel to prevent it from lifting.

Perhaps this is what's happening with your pano roof. Again, this shouldn't be hard to find or run across because the failure of the rear panel of the pano sunroof seems to be its weak point...so most discussions about pano failure should bring the topic up.

If it is not resolved hold the button down for about a minute it goes through a reset procedure. Double check if I am remembering right, Google x5 sunroof reset.
