cold start problem with fully charged battery

happy new year to all , ok my battery or drain saga continues...temps out here are what most peope on the forum would class as mild 7c has been the coldest so far....

I thought last nite at 7pm to hook up the ctek under the hood and took it off at 7am this morning....the led on ctek showed green ie fully charged battery.

However it took leaving the key position 1 for 7-10 seconds before the X5 would fire up...this has got me confused....either the ctek is telling me battery is charged and aint or I have some other issue with the X5...any pointers much appreciated.... I know having a 3.0d engine narrows down the feedback I may get but thought I'd try the forum.....

Diesel, hard first start of the day in cold weather, with a fully charged battery?

I would check the glow plugs. You might have one or more dead ones.

Good point thanks for the feedback, would I have any other symptoms of a bad glow plug? rough idling etc?

Not always, that's the thing, especially with electronic controlled diesels like in your X.

In the diesels I've owned, the plugs are usually on only before starting, they have nothing to do with engine operating. So they dont cause any running issues, only hard start issues.

Usually, it's the very first start of the day that's the problem, especially in cold weather. For the rest of the day it starts normally. The next morning, hard start again and then normal for the rest of the day...repeat.

thanks g300d, would an electricians garage be able to hookup diags via the obd to detect if the glows plug are an issue and do this easily? darn this is nuts all along I thought my battery was an issue....could be a combination of course of the plugs and the battery

Yes, an electrician could check that easily. I am not sure on this particular engine if it is connected to on board diagnostics though.

If you have a tester, you can check yourself.

I am not familiar with your engine, but normally glowplugs stick out the top of the head. In the morning with the key off, hook up the tester to the glowplug leads and have an assistant turn key to pre-ignition and check for 12v to the plugs.

If you have 12v to the glowplug leads then they are getting power, you could start pulling the glow plugs and apply 12v and see if they heat up.

No power to glowplug lines and you will have to trace back. It could be the the glow plug relay/control module, not sure what BMW uses to control the pre-ignition system.

Yes either (bad battery/charging or bad pre-ignition system) can by itself cause a no-start.

Together, in cold weather, is definitely bad news lol!

Hi Sonny! Turned out to be a faulty relay feeding power to the electric diesel pump. It worked just intermittently when temperatures went below freezing. They changed it and the car has started every time since, in all temperatures.

Ah, yes, definitely a possibility as well!

You can check that by cracking open a fuel line while trying to start the engine, to see if there is fuel.

Or listening by the electric fuel pump and have an assistant turn ignition, you should hear the pump work?

Never had to consider that on my old German diesels, they had mechanical fuel inection (W123 and W124 Mercedes 300D's).

Hmm thanks have to figure out where this electric fuel pump is to be frank....
