I did loose extension bar at 1 point but retrieved it after about 1 hour off looking, been and checked and double checked bolts are present and done up, if it was something rattling or catching on something that I over looked wouldn't it do It when car is cold also, think I might have too just admit defeat and take it to a Indy garage, I really hate using garages the ones you can 100% trust are few and far between let alone finding the fault first time..

Sounds to me like the fan is ticking against something - based on the frequency, and how it would get louder when you got closer to the fan.

Yes my first thought was something touching fan but can't see anything and it would do it even when first start up I assume.
Rob, when you say oil breather do you mean the plastic air intake that goes to the air filter, if yes that was connected I just disconnected for video because noise is bit louder without it on. I even resorted to talking to it today, ha, I said show me were your problem is and I'll give you good buff and polish. Still nothing,

Been on it again today, took everything off that and replaced breather with original, all bolts, screws, hex,s were all there and tight, had really good look in engine bay with torch and didn't see anything suspect, done the screwdriver listening thing, tried stopping fan but didn't seem to want to so I didn't push my luck, (if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any luck) put back the bits/bobs not 100% but I'm sure it's bit quieter now, going to try find a good mechanic, any recormendations the southwest uk please let me no.

Thankyou all again for help/advice with this issue, if/wen ever a club meet I'll ow few people a beer.

Nothing in Somerset ,but I can recommend someone in Stroud (about 1 hour drive)that I do remaps for and has excellent facilities and is a pro.
Ask for Dan Turner and say Fernando sent you,or just give speak to him and he may give his opinion on your ticking noise

Cool thanks, will give them call and have chat,in the mean time I'm hoping iv done the right thing (probably not nowing me, ha.) service 2... I think it was mentioned in a previous comment or I'm going mad) use 0w40 bit thicker oil as its quite high mileage or somthing to that affect, SO went out and got Mobil 1 0w40 turbo diesel oil, new toilet roll type breather filter, and new oil filter, after doing another service took her for drive and vast improvement, seems to drive better, engine just seemed to like it better and it has reduced the ticking a lot, still have a little bit but no were near as much,
People are going to want to shoot me soon, should I off gone 5w30. Speaking to a bmw parts guy today when picked up filters and he said use 0w40 also he also said years ago the x5,s were run on 10w40 and I could even go down that root, MAN IM SO OIL CONFUSED.COM....
