X5 engine oil

Hi, I'm confused about selecting correct engine oil for my 2003 x5 3.0d, have read several posts but still no definite answer, any help will be very welcome. 😊

If you have your owner's manual, it'll be there.

IIRC LL-01 or LL-04 is recommended

I believe some of our Aussie posters have posted their oil preferences for the diesel six. Suggest a search for 'diesel' and perhaps the LL01 or other engine oil criteria [brand names, castrol for example?] if you can't locate an owners' manual.

as above it is ment to be bmw specific LL-04 oil, I use PETRONAS syntium 5w30 low ash oil as that's what we use where I work at fiat and is also ll-04 grade how ether you can use other grades as long as its turbo diesel approved as I had this discussion in another thread and some were using grades such as 0w40 etc but id stick to the 5w30 fully synthetic ll-04 stuff if it was me, my local bmw main dealer said to use 5w30 castrol magnatec

I thought LL-01 is for gas and LL-04 is for diesel.

You are thinking of North America.

Yes, any approved BMW longlife 01 and 04 will work fine. Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge are some of your options.

BMW LL04 engine oil is a longlife engine oil required for petrol engine BMWs and diesel engine BMWs with soot filters (diesel particulate filters) from 2004 onwards. LL04 engine oil can also be used on older BMWs in place of Longlife-01, Longlife-98 and BMW Spezial approval.
