Does My Car Have DSP?

Hi all,

I just bought a 2003 X5 (it's not even home yet) and I'm wanting to add Bluetooth capability. There is a good selection of aftermarket adapters, but they all require an additional part if the car is equipped with "DSP". This car has Nav, and when you press the MENU button it does not display a DSP item on the screen. Does that mean I do not need the DSP wiring for the aftermarket product or do I still need to inspect the wiring in the rear of the car to see if the DSP COAX is there?

Thanks,

Chris

BMW X5 Series E53 2000 2006 Alpine Amplifier HI FI Hifi System Control Audio AMP | eBay

BMW E38 E39 E53 X5 Hifi DSP Amplifier Sound Audio AMP Philips Reman E6308J | eBay

here are the 2 different amps your car came with

it isn't the exact item your car actually has but the case of the amplifier is the 100% way to make sure, as the case of the amps hasn't changed

Thank you Gurjit! Since I don't have the car home yet, I can't inspect the amp. Is this something the dealer can snap and text a pic to me and I'll be able to tell?

if the dealer has half a brain they should be able to tell you just by looking at the connectors on the amp

This isn't a BMW dealer, it's an independent. They're doing their best though. Have sent me pics of the radio face and the menu screen. I'm sure they would be willing to send a pic of the amp if it would be of value. From the eBay listings you sent, it looks like the chassis of the amp would be a tell-tale, if you could see it via photo...

Do you have the last 7 digits of the VIN? If yes, then run your X5 thru the VIN decoder to see if it originally came with DSP. The option code for DSP is S677A HiFi System Professional DSP

VIN Decoder website: BMW Model Archive · BMW VIN Decoder · bmwarchive.org

Now over the last 12 years...a previous owner could have changed the amp...but if DSP doesnt appear as a selection when you press MENU (see imagebelow)...then more than likely you don't have it. But there's nothing like a visual inspection to see if the amp has the 3 connectors on top whichindicate it's a DSP amp.

Thank you Qsilver7. No S677A is shown. There is a S609A (Nav) and then S676A (HiFi), but no S677A.

Since DSP isn't listed on the option code...and neither does it appear when you press the MENU button...you can pretty much write it off as not installed.

Thank you again Qsilver7. So - mind another question?...

I want to implement Bluetooth on this car, primarily for music, but phone would be nice. The phone is an iPhone 6 with Lightening connector. OE iPod integration or aftermarket (Grom) adapter? Grom does not support factory mic. That would be nice, but not a priority.

Chris, I just installed the Soundplicity from Bavarian Soundworks. It takes the place of your front ashtray. Really nice system, I have the Iphone 5, so would have to check for the 6. You do lose the cd changer, stupid in the trunk anyways ( Going to install Dynavin shortly to solve that). Any q's just ask- great info here
