I get your inference--I should never have made that post. I don't want to start a dick-dance about who is faster. I took TMV's bait. I'm old enough to know better. I forgot for just that moment that there is always someone faster.
TMV, I retract my challenge. Dumb s%$t move.

![]() All Good. We're just playing around a bit right? bcredliner I do like your 4.6iS BTW. We like them equally regardless of what version we have. I had the same love for my old 01 3.0i as I do now for my 06 Dinan 4.8iS (ok, just a very tiny bit more for the iS)

This thread is a 4.6 thread. It is not a 4.8, 4.4 or 3.0 topic. Drawing conclusions or posts based on overall X5 models or anything other than a 4.6 are not pertinent.
I believe it is extremely infrequent the 4.6 is used as minivan and cast off in poor condition. I think the majority are very well cared for. It is likely they are driven harder but having driven mine hard for 114,000 miles with 10,000 of that with meth injection and 150 shot of nitrous on top of the Dinan mods, I don't think it is anything to be that concerned about. The "why spend it on an old car" comment doesn't make sense to me since all X5s in this forum are near the same age and I expect we all still have one. In addition, if it is a 3.0 or 4.4 that does not offer as much a potential thrill as a 4.6. The reason I continue to spend money on this old car is I still love everything about it and it is always a great uplifting experience to take it for a drive.

yes, the M62 is designed to be driven fast at high rpm's (not drag race). I would average a redline everyday merging onto the freeway and I believe that is key to a healthy engine as long as it's been taken care of and is in healthy condition such as sensors and seals.

A stock 4.6 can't break the tires loose on the street so a strip launch is not going to be any harder on the engine or driveline than a full throttle start on the street.

"For $XXX I can get another vehicle. Why spend it on this old car?" That is not my opinion. It is the average thought process of owners of all vehicles.
Based on my observations, X5's V8 owners falling to two major camps: High end car owner mind set, fix everything and keep it looking nice. Investment, image, experience, & performance. Or casual owner, add electronic entertainment, and complain about maintenance costs. I think as the E53 ages beyond 10+ years there will be a whole lot fewer ones that are striking good examples. Many of the nice ones are found posting on the forum. In my own high rise office complex there are only 2 that are clean (V8). The other 4 are 6 cyl models that are washed when it rains. One has enough old gym clothes in the back to double as the locker room at the Y. Needless to say it is not washed often, much less detailed. Long Live the V8s!

Well said Stephen, my thoughts are echoed with your sentiment. Do you mean even the puny I6? ![]() "Why Spend Money on an Old Car" is something a nagging wife/girlfriend/mistress might say, but its the opposite when you know how well the E53 drives and just because the year of manufacture may be 10+ years ago or more, I urge you to find better kept vehicles that are half its age, when speaking of many of the members on this forum who actually love, enjoy, and maintain their vehicles to keep them, not just to offload it at the first big repair. I can't see myself driving anything else for a long time to come, it's been over 3 years already and my love relationship with my X has really just started. Don't even get me started on the whole 3-pedal driving experience with the capability of a luxury AWD vehicle conversation, there is NO comparison there and no lateral moves in that dept. Yes Porsche Cayenne but at 5x the price of the E53.
