Slow gear change between 1st and 2nd.

I have a 2004 4.4 X5. One thing I have always noticed is that if I plant my foot from rest, there is a long delay as the transmission changes from 1st to 2nd gear (almost as if the transmission is protecting itself from a big surge of power). However, if I accelerate at only 9/10ths throttle, the change is almost instantaneous.

Is this delay normal?

Cheers, Simon

I would not say "normal" as in "as designed" but perhaps common enough as my 4.8 suffers from the same malady. That particular shift is very slushy (lots of slip). This also happens when I shift manually from 1st to 2nd at close to redline. Sounds like a trans pressure setting problem that might be remedied by a software update if there is such a parameter in the s/w. Otherwise, there might be an adjustment the dealer can perform. I am scheduled for the reprogram next week.

There is a tranny update out. I'll have to find my invoice when I got my new tranny and I'll post a copy here.
