One thing I should point out is the cluster volts and the voltometer volts are way diffrent. The cluster will say 12.1 volts but the voltometer on the front jump hook ups say 12.70

I'm facepalming if I read this right. You plugged in the FSR but didn't install it....

the cooling fins use the airflow from the fan to cool the unit. That's why its jammed into the fan shroud. Its a massive resistor which gets super hot. that's why over time it craps out.

If I didn't read that right, then you've got problems.

thats voltage drop. I cant comment on how much is normal on our cars, but the cluster is measuring the voltage post the fuse box, post the wiring, post a module or maybe two, and from a battery sitting 10 ft away in the trunk of the car. some is to be expected.

we have kinda veered off ezra5's original post here, did ezra5 sort out the issue?

great, thats good. I thought non-oem ones were suspect?, either way all depends on how easy it is to replace...suppose if it doesnt work out and cheap enough and easy enough to install/remove, dont matter, you can go for an orginal later.....
