starter motor fuse?

Hello all, as subject suggests I am looking for the starter motor fuse, cannot find it! its neither in the rear compartment or in the glvoebox area, anyone any ideas? could it perhaps be one of the high amp fuses that are in the spare tire compartment area(and not labelled up anyway)?

Reason I ask is that I believe my starter is drawing larger than 400amp at each engine start causing me sluggish starts and draining my battery gradually as normal dailiy driving is not enough to replenish this loss , as suggested by one reader if the starter is rated at 2.2kw(oem one seems to be) that means it works at 12V X 183amps=2200watts approx, why does no fuse blow if the amp drawing device has a fault and is drawing more than the 183a rating?

cheers

The starter is wired directly to the battery, no fuse. The starter solenoid is in the same circuit as the ews system.

thanks for the feedback...good to know...still can't understant why there isnt a fuse associated with it as such....in all fairness have read on uk x5 sites and mostly 3.0d owners that their starters were drawing upwards of 300amps on startup.....and hence causing startup issues....

Compression ratio for a diesel is a lot greater then the compression ratio for a petrol. Hence the starter has to work a lot harder to turn the engine over.

thanks for the reply, most of the uk drivers like I said were x5 3.0d e53 owners, swapping the starter out made starting more snappy and instant....and I am still straining my brain understanding this please correct my theory:

starter rating 2.2kW (2200watts)
a battery that has min 12V has to suppply 183.333333amps to pump out this i.e
2200watts (power)2200 =(I)183 x (V)12

when cranking engine the volts drop correct under this load? say it drops to 9.6volts(any lower battery is bad) the current that needs to flow to output the 2200watts is 2200/9.6=230amps

2200watts=9.6v x 230amps

Based on above regardless of whether diesels need more power or not by the starter, is it safe to say that an amp draw of over say 250amps is too high when cranking over a diesel?

amp clamp meters arent something everyone at home has alas, this plus the fact that it is a nightmare to get to the battery cables to use the clmap on means I cant get anyone on the forum to check this and compare....(and in the u.s not sure you have the diesels either?)

Having said all that, I passed a DIY store this am before it opened, 1 guy in parking lot waiting at doors, and one e53 X5 3.0d sitting there, asked him if he is having issues with startup in colder conditions, he said no, but he said in the past on this 2005 model he had the starter replaced as it was fried-burnt!
