Anybody got lucky a broke a door carrier
Heh, been a E53 owner since '03. It's been the wife's car when I picked up my F10. I let her take the F10 to work today with the xDrive equipped while I worked from home today.
Just came back from cleaning out all the snow, and the ice-ridden frozen mix that was on the X. Pulled on the door handle slowly, no resistance, which was a good thing. Pulled ont he drivers side. No resistetence. However, both doors were not opening up freely. The weatherstripping is nice and lubed with Gummi Fledge. It was just the wintery mix that help the door tight. Gave it a good hard tug and the door broke free from the icy mix holding it to the chassis. Whew, I say. Dodged a golden bullet and no broken door carrier ;-) Me wonders how many E53'ers were not so lucky this season. Last edited by jsoto; 02-02-2015 at 06:56 PM. |

Not as many have been reporting the carrier breaking this year or those that have, looked up the multitude of threads on this topic and repaired them.
Cold weather, snow & ice, poor designed parts, and a heavy pull = carrier time. I have mine unlocked sitting in the driveway as temps are going down to the low 20's in Wash DC tonight. (Yes, it is boxed in with other vehicles).

I thought I broke one when the temps dipped down into the teens. I lucked out and once the door thawed it started working again. I have since lubed all the handles.

I've never lubed the carrier at all via the door handle or inside that *side door cover*.
It generally has sat indoors, avoiding freezing wet conditiomns, but I had parts astrewn in the 2nd bay so the X sits outside. Does the lube via these 2 access holes really do ~mitigate~ the problem. |

Same issue today. Drivers door will not open. Had the same issue on my e39 when the weather was below 20f. Did everything and will not open. Got from passenger side drove the car and dropped the kids to school. Kept the heater on high. By the time I got back the ice melted and the door opened. Shot wd40 into the locks just to make sure they don't freeze again.

Sal. Don't tug the sh1e$ out of the handle if it won't give. Sometimes if you feel resistence, you know that last pull will just snap it. It should feel nice and free when you pull on the handle FWIW....
Hope your WD40 mitigates or PREVENT's the problem completely. I've never lubed mine......but I am curious for those that do the locks religiously, has it proven it's efforts... |

I don't know if it will prevent breaking, but it should keep the handle from freezing and it moves smoother.

Replaced one today on my 2000. Had nothing to do with temperature, as it broke about a month and a half ago in about 70 degree weather. The metal just broke, no lube could have saved it.
