BMW X5 Parking Sensor Problem

Hi,

I'm new to this Forum - please be gentle with me. . . .

I purchased a 2001 X5 4.4 Sport recently and am very very impressed with it !

I have a problem with the parking sensors - when I engage "PDC" it bleeps at me and flashes the light on the button. The manual says simply "Take it to a dealer".

Could someone give me somewhere to start investigating the problem? I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty but need a starting point.

To complicate the issue - they worked when I bought the car and now they work about 1 in 10 times I use it.

Any advice welcome.
