Steering wheel makes a clunk noise

Does anyone know what this could be?
When I turn the wheel left or right I get a muffled 'clunk' sound. People in the backseat can even hear it. It sounds like something may be worn down.

I have a 2009 4.8 and I hope it's minor and/or covered by the CPO warranty.
Thanks for any info.

Maybe the front CV joint or the boot.
Grease coming out of a small crack or tear is the early sign of the CV joint boot failing.

Hmmm.

Thrust arm bushings
center link
balljoints
CV joints (following boot failure)

Have you read the CPO document? As I recall they carve our 'suspension'

Do you have an indy? Might be worth a few $ to have someone give it a quick look for obvious issues, the dealer will surely rape you if it isnt CPO. I tend to diagnose first, then only bring stuff in if it is covered.

I had a similar problem. I could feel it in the steering wheel. The dealer said that they lubed the steering column where it passes through the firewall. This was under the original warranty. It has been about 30 K miles and the problem has not returned.

Thanks for the feedback. I just dropped her off at the stealer (yes, I've learned to be wary).
Service guy says IF its a cv boot, its $600 and not covered due to wear n tear but to not jump to conclusions. Fingers crossed.

He also said that since CPO expires this summer, he would look for any "potential future issues". Would a dealer really be inclined to do this?

They get the warranty work money from BMW. Sure they would rather have you pay it, but maybe business is a little slow right now or they feel you will take it elsewhere and they get nothing. The SA has a certain metric to meet to make the dealership happy. They also want to get all 10's on the survey.

i'm having the same sort of problem. I get a pronounced clunk sound, and can feel it through the steering wheel. It seems to be happening only when turning on an inclined surface, or uneven surface....
any idea what this could be? have ruled out the front driveshafts, and CV boot rubber. All seem to be fine. Could this be a sway bar link?

Yes, I was told it was the sway bar. Not covered by the cpo warranty bc it's considered wear n tear. I guess only new parts on a 5 year old vehicle are covered. Wha wha??

Here's a diy link if you're interested.

Same on mine

Exact same thing...slight clunk with a creak on inclined surfaces. I notice it in parking garages. Doing the end links tomorrow.
