Shifter Issue

I have a 2008 X5 and the left button on my shifter is stuck so it looks like I need to replace the shifter. Has anyone replaced the assembly yet? I found a used one but wanted to know if it requires any type of programming after it gets replaced. Also I read it is possible to just remove the shifter. Can I replace it without taking apart the center console or do I have to replace the whole assembly. The part number I am replacing is 61319168847 (Gear Selector Switch)

I was able to pop the button out so hopefully that will suffice.

Thx,

Doug

Does replacing the shifter assembly require any type of programming after it is replaced or is it plug and play?

Does anyone know the answer to this? My shifter assembly came in today and I wanted to know if I can just replace it myself or if any type of programming needs to be done after I replace it?

I've changed shifters several times (was working on getting paddles shifters to work on my 4.8, had 3 different shifters in rotation) and it was just plug in the new one and go... No programming needed.

I had an issue with my shifter, 09 35d, not allowing the shifter to be moved into sport mode. I also had a code for a shifter malfunction when checking codes with DIS. I do not remember the exact code.
Taking the shifter out is very easy, you can then remove the 4 or 5 screws holding the top part of the shifter to the bottom part. It is spring loaded so hold pressure down on the upper section to slowly release the pressure with the screws. In the bottom cavity of the shifter assembly you will find a white piece of plastic that is moved by a cam actuated by a small motor. apparently my motor went out and left the plastic extended causing the shift lever to not go into sport mode. I simply removed this instead of buying a new shifter assembly and have not had an issue.
Your problem my be similar if the motor is stuck in a different position.

Is your gear shifter assembly been working fine since? I guess no programming required huh?

Yes, no issues other then the codes that are only seen when scanning. no coding required.

Will any gear shifter with EDC or Sport mode button will work on mine plug and play (I have the sports package) including the ones from X5m?
