I realize that. Thought it would be the same.

Ordered parts today. Unless the upper timing chain cover is leaking, I decided not to touch it. Otherwise I will have to lift the valve cover gasket, which would require removal of intake manifold, etc.
I would like to know if this is a good strategy?

Sound decision IMO. The only overlap in work between the oil thermostat housing gasket and the valve cover / upper timing covers is the electric fan, intake runners and serpentine belt. All of that is maybe 20 minutes work.
If you do need to do either of the valve cover gaskets or timing covers I would do them all at once and just be done with it. |

That's the plan. If it turns out the leak source is the upper timing chain cover above the oil thermostat housing, I will replace both valve cover gaskets and timing chain covers (along with various O-rings), and probably spark plugs, too. At this point I hope all those won't be necessary.

2009 Xdrive 4.8i oil leak: oil cooler thermostat or timing cover gasket, pic ...
Well I ran out of daylight today so I called it a day (not that it matters much lol).
Any specifics on how to get the two smaller E-torx bolts on the oil cooler thermostat? I have a bunch of sockets/extensions but none worked so far.

Hopefully you are using e-torx sockets?
They are a PITA but as I remember I had the most luck with a short wobble extension on the e-torx socket. As I mentioned in this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/1052557-post8.html I replaced them with stainless steel socket head cap screws I got from Orchard Supply. |

Yes, I am using e-torx sockets. I have two different sets, long and short. I tried both sets with a universal joint but I may need a different extension. At this point I couldn't even get the e10's on the bolts straight.
I will definitely consider replacing the bolts with allen head ones if/once I get them out. Not worth the hassle trying to put the originals back in

By the way, what was your angle of approach, top or bottom?
