2008 3.0si Radiator Replacement

My 2008 3.0 has recently developed a small coolant leak. Looks like its coming from the driver side of the radiator. Does not appear to be a hose leak but likely the radiator itself is failing. Vehicle has roughly 115K miles.

As I change the radiator I plan to change the hoses and belts as well.

After doing some research it looks like BMW has changed the radiator design which requires an different radiator hose and perhaps a vent cap (plug).

REALOEM provides the following part numbers:
1711 7 585 036 Radiator (new and requires the next part)
1153 7 609 944 Hose Cooler for Engine Oil
1712 7 593 490 Coolant Hose (Requires next 2 parts - Upper?)
1712 7 536 235 Vent Pipe
1712 7 598 004 Cap
1712 7 537 108 Coolant Hose (Lower?)
1712 7 537 109 Coolant Hose (4 way Inlet?)
1712 7 537 101 Coolant Hose (reservoir hose?)
1712 7 555 290 Vent Pipe (recovery tank hose)

Can anyone with recent experience or knowledge confirm that these are the correct parts that I need to replace the radiator and hoses?

Thanks in advance

Doing a little more research would suggest that the last part in my list (No 1712 7 555 290 Vent Pipe) is an older version of the vent pipe that ends with 235 (in the middle of my list) therefore, I shouldn't need the one that ends in 290.

Also, the older "Vent Pipe" (ends in 290) had an additional vent line that use to connect to an older version of the upper hose. Since I am replacing both the vent line and the upper hose with the newer version I will not need the "Cap" (ends in 004) as there will be nothing to plug (those lines will no longer directly connect).

I have contemplated on whether to replace the water pump and thermostat while I have it torn apart but they were both replaced about 30K miles ago so I am hoping I should be OK for a while.

I would appreciate anyone's insights and confirmation on the part numbers.

I Did a radiator replacement on my 08 last year. The New top radiator hose is revised to omit on of the small return to the expansion tank. However you would need to omit this hose or plug it (as I did) or replace the expansion tank. I used the new revised radiator....to a 4 hole from a 5 hole.

I noticed after replacement that every time I got on it (stomped on the accelerator) It would trigger a CEL that indicated a Thermostat fault. I could hear a noticeable "whine" coming from the engine bay. The water pump was fine but the thermostat was bad. I replaced it and haven't gotten the error since. It could have been purely coincidental but I noticed it coincided with the radiator and hose revision.

The job was fairly easy took a couple hours. Watch out for the little flaps on the fan shroud. They break off very easily. Getting the bottom passenger side hose off was a pain in the A$$. If you need any guidance feel free to PM me.

Hey bmrboi2, I think you mentioned that you replaced all hoses and belts on your thread capturing your replacement.

I am in the middle of mine but I am questioning whether I ordered all the hoses I need.

Did you replace Part Number 1712 756 1686 which is identified as a "Refrigerant Pipe" part no. 10 in the attached picture (long hose on right side)? I did not order this part.

OK, just completed the job. Not too bad. It took me the better part of the day but much of that was spent wrestling with how to remove and install the air compressor belt and then running to several auto parts stores to find a 60 Torx to remove the serpentine belt as it is needed to loosen the tension on the belt.

BTW, I bought a tool from Autozone called an OEM Elastic Belt Installation tool (see attached picture). It did not work and I just ended up wrestling it on with a flat piece of steel similar to what someone else used on the board. If I had it to do over again I would have sourced a better belt removal and installation tool in advance that is made to work for our vehicle.

As far as parts goes, the new style radiator only has 4 holes as opposed to the 5 on the original equipment and the hose configurations are a bit different. If you replace all the hoses with the radiator these are the parts you will need (there are a few parts mentioned in my first post that are not needed if replacing everything):

1711 7 585 036 Radiator
1153 7 609 944 Coolant Hose
1712 7 593 490 Coolant Hose
1712 7 536 235 Vent Pipe
1712 7 537 108 Coolant Hose (Lower?)
1712 7 537 109 Coolant Hose (4 way Inlet?)
1712 7 537 101 Coolant Hose (reservoir hose?)

1712 7 561 686 (Refrigerant Pipe - I did not replace this one - I think it goes to the heater)

1128 7 557 257 (Serpentine Belt)
1128 7 552 084 (AC Compressor Belt - May be different depending on options)

All in all parts cost me about $680 sourced through e-bay vendors.

Weird, can't seem to get the low coolant warning to go away aftertheradiatorreplacement. I have topped off the coolant a couple times and it seems to have stabalized at the full mark but the warning light won't go away. It was working fine beforehand and I don't think I touched the wire harness on the coolant expansion tank.

Any ideas?

No I Actually did not replace that one at the time. My Mistake for that. As for your low coolant light you may need a new expansion tank or the sensor for the coolant.

Have you tried scanning the truck for any codes?
