E90 335D and e70 35D same engine?

Hey, guys, just as the topic states, can I buy a used 335D engine and install it into E70 35D? Or they are completely different? Thank you.

The block is the same but that's about it. You are better off getting a x5d m57 for simplicity otherwise you'll be swapping many components

There is much more in common than just the block, most of the main engine (block, head, manifolds, small turbo, many bolt on accessories are the same as well.

OP if you are doing a swap ex: replacing a blown engine then you should have all the X5 specific parts already and you can just swap them over prior to install. Also, RealOEM.com can give you a definitive list of what the differences are.

One of the items that comes to mind is the oil sump, the X5 has the front diff bolted to it and pretty sure it is different from the 335d. Also the EGR is set up differently (but I think you deleted all the emission controls already?). So, yes, sounds like a bit of a wrench fest but not impossible.

If the cost differences are minimal, I'd lean towards an M57 from an X5 before a 3 series just to save time, and to have a spare set of X5 specific parts that might be non functional on the replacement engine.

Just got back from a short trip with a friend in his 2014 535d. Apparently there was a short span of time in which there was a US version of the 535d. He bought his (US spec) while stationed in Europe and brought it here last spring, so not sure about this. It is the 8-speed but perhaps this engine spec is also an option for a transplant?

Perhaps, but check that it had the m57 and not the n57 in the f15 x5. Pretty sure it was the latter.

As an aside, I convinced my Dad to buy a 535d to replace his 328d that was sent to an early grave by a young driver. He loves it. And the gas mileage is crazy. 40+mpg when we drove it home from Kentucky. Glad he went for it, he's to old and too big to be driving a small 3 series.
