Knocking sound from rear 1/4 inside

Need some help

First time since the test drive in December last year that anyone has sat in the back of the beast.....

Well yesterday I noticed a knocking sound on the rear left hand side behind the back seat everytime I went over a bump, definitely inside and only happens when someone sitting in the back....

The sound is almost like the seat belt unit or rear set back is not either tight enough or the seat back is not locked correctly which it is

Any ideas or has anybody had this before or heard of it....

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately BMW UK thought they had resolved it and put it down to a broken Seat Latch.....however the rattle is back and I now have the Area general manager coming out with me on the 10th August as the last step before I reject the vehicle

bump...i'm interested in this as well. complained about this recently and had the rear hatch trim replaced under warranty, which is what's prescribed by a bmw tsb. unfortunately, this fix has not remedied the problem.

fullfast, just curious...is it a rather loud knock when you ride over a bump? mine is pretty loud and at first i thought it was the body torquing over uneven bumps, which it might be.

regardless, this shouldn't happen in a $65k vehicle. anyone else had success in eliminating this knocking sound?

Reagan......the first one was a loud clonking (the loud knock you mentioned) sound which turned out to be a faulty seat latch on the rear seat squab......which was swapped under warranty.....as well as that they changed two other pieces of trim panel at the same time but every time they seem to cure one another one appears.......but I have noticed that it is more prevelent when one side goes over a bump rather than both which could be down to torque flex.....

But the X5 is one of the most rigid there.......

I agree that the X is/should be one of the most rigid frames in the suv/sav space. I just received my post-service survey and a separate email from the dealer service manager. I'll respond to him that I'm holding onto my survey until they rectify the problem. If they do, I'll report back what action was taken.

Rattle in the rear

I had two rattles:

1) driver's side (left side in the US) rear seat latch - adjusted and fixed by the dealer
2) rattle in the back hatch - supposedly fixed by the dealer but there's still a rattle there.

I just went outside and checked on #2 since it was annoying me. If you actually hold the latch with your finger and try to move it around, it sounds exactly like the rattle I get. Once I figure out a way to stop it from jiggling, I will road test to verify that the noise is gone.

Update... Just came back from the dealer and the rattle is definitely gone! They performed this service bulletin titled "Noise from Rear Trunk Lid"

http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B513710g.htm

And here's the corresponding PDF pictures on what they do...

I also have noticed a knocking with someone in the back seat, but I have asked several of my friends who have sat there "what is that noise?" only to get the "what noise?" reply...I then become annoyed that people can be so oblivious to their surroundings and I move on to another topic of discussion.
I may need to look into the seat latch, thanks!
