Is this thing loud or is it me? FIXED (?)

My 2011 X5 35i drive line noise seems loud. Loud meaning what sounds like a whining noise from the transmission. The noise changes pitch/frequency with engine rpm and is more noticeable at low (under 10 mph) speeds. It seems to shift fine, no codes or CEL lamps are lit, the trans oil temp is lower than the engine oil temp. I did a fluid drain and fill of approximately 4.5 liters before I do the complete filter pan change. The noise is no different, which is actually a relief, but it just seems louder than it should be, but i have no other reference. Anyone else?

I think mine makes the same noise you are referring to. I've never thought anything of it. I did 2 full pan drops and a new ZF filter/pan yesterday. No change in noise. Shifting is better, though.

I noticed you didn't use ZF8 fluid. Any reason?

I might be driving myself nuts with this noise. It actually seems louder inside the truck.

This noise (or not) is also when stationary. It changes pitch along with the engine revs.

It's over-priced. No technical specifications. For all I know it's re-branded Pentosin or something of lesser quality.

Don't say that loud. The oil police may crucify you for heresy...

If the noise is also when stationary then it may not be from the transmission. Does it changes in any way whether you're stationary in neutral or drive?

It changes up and down along with engine rpms. Neutral or drive.

I was unable to find much info when searching for drive line noises, but I searched for N55 noises and came across a few people referencing the steering pump. I noticed my noise got louder the closer the rack was to a full lock, left or right, and much louder at full lock. I flushed out the old fluid with CHF 11S and the truck is considerably quieter. The fluid was filthy black, it was probably never changed.

Good to know! I plan on doing the same to my 4.8 with the adaptive drive. It's a BIG reservoir though. Probably holds 2 quarts alone. CHF 11S is spendy stuff.

How did you flush yours?
