Has anyone experienced a failing HUD?

Started the car this morning and was greeted by a flickering HUD that eventually turned into just some red colored bars that look like old static on TVs. Has anyone experienced something like this before?

I started it and drove to work, and tried pressing the button, and it came on with my speed once, then reverted back to the red bar static stuff. The real question here, is would this be a failing HUD or something in the MOST connection system supplying the information, given that it's still lit and everything, just crapping out what it's showing on the display.

An interesting note, when I use a different key, it turned on immediately, and failed a little into the drive. For some reason, when switching between keys, it lasts on a little bit longer. It's pretty bizarre. I will read the codes when I'm home and see what it says.

I'm gonna miss using this thing, probably one of my favorite parts of the car. I imagine a new one will run several $1000s so not really that interested in spending that to fix it.

Here's a picture

bumping to see if you have any updates on the troubleshooting.

i did a quick search on HUD part, and it is not cheap. if i'm looking at it right, it's about $2.7K for the heads up display unit (#5 in diagram).

No support yet. I ran codes and got back a failing optical imaging unit. Ordered a replacement from Russia (used) for $350 and it just got here.

Do you have any idea how to completely remove the dash on the e70? I can't find much of a writeup, and I think it's necessary to replace the unit.

Just got in my replacement. Got it for $295 off a totaled car in Russia. Was packed well, and seller only sold BMW parts and was rated 100%.

Does any coding need to take place to get the new HUD to work, or will this work as soon as I swap the old unit?

Does anyone have a manual for removing the dash? Seems like it's necessary to replace the HUD.

Google x6 HUD retrofit, there's a pretty expansive post from a retrofit co that shows dash removal. I use it every time I have an itch to get HUD for mine. Few pictures in and the itch goes away (yeas I know a special windshield is also needed).
