CA only working with one fob

New to the forum as of a week ago. Just picked up an '08 X5 4.8i.

It has comfort access, but only appears to be working with one fob. Car will start, and doors unlock by touch properly with one fob, but not the other. I changed the battery on the second one, and it will unlock/lock the doors via the buttons, but no luck through CA.

I haven't tested starting the car, with or without it inserted, as the other fob was always with us.

Is there a physical difference between fobs? Is it possible that there was only fob that works with CA? Any way to register this as a CA key without going to the dealer? I'm currently doing research on getting set up for DIS/GT1/INPA...it's a lot to process.

The previous owner may have bought the second key fob, but failed to have the dealer program the CA features. It is a dealer only process (as far as I know) and is done for a charge.

I picked up a second key for my 07 and it locked, unlocked and started the car, but the CA features did not work until I had time to go back to the dealer for the programming.

Sounds like one of the key fobs was never programmed...

Well that's a bit of a bummer. I'm planning on installing a hitch soon so maybe I'll get a two for one programming deal.

Where do you buy a key fob that will open and close. It would be nice to have an extra and don't really care if it's CA or not.

You can choose what kind of key you want to buy from the dealer. You can even buy plastic wallet key and open the doors and start the car with the key adapter.
I can make CA keys and register them properly in the CAS. I dont even need the car, just the CAS and a working key.
