sheared glow plug
my vehicle threw CEL P0676: Cylinder 6 glow plug circuit/open few weeks back. i used it daily till now and had the time to go in and replace the plug as well as clean up the intake system carbon build up. i figured i'd do all 6 plugs & replace the gaskets as a preventative maintenance. so last night i started at cylinder 1 and found that the tip of the glow plug electrode, below the collar, sheared off when i broke the plug loose. i am looking at options and would really appreciate any direction. i was about to order a glow plug removal kit but decided to consult the forum first as the tips of the plugs are ceramic i am not certain extraction by tapping and pulling is possible. also the directions i have found for this process generally show much more of the plug body &/or electrode remaining in the GP hole. thanks (i posted this same question in bimmerfest as well) |

I hope the head doesn't have to come off.
I managed to swap my glow plugs a while back without any stripping, but I'd be interested in how you do end up solving the issue

i second that. i have never removed a head on any vehicle. if i determine that 1. it is the only solution & 2. i can handle the work, i'd be more than happy to post a DIY.
that being said, i'd gladly take any information on that job... be it precautions or general steps, etc. |

I may add some tip in removing the glow plugs w/o stripping is to bring the engine to operating temp, this may be difficult especially the glow plugs are under the intake manifold and also lightly tap the glow plug (using a socket) to help loosen it up some carbon before removing... optional using an electric impact tool that can adjust the torque amount (lowest setting) the hammering action of it can help loosen it too,
i had to replace the GP on the Mercedes bluetec engine, and they came out like it was nothing when the engine was at operating temp. |
