I'm on my fourth check engine light in three months.

First - replaced EGR cooler

Second - replaced both Nox sensors

Third - new EGR cooler broke, replaced again

Now - they have gotten BMW corp involved and looking at replacing the catalytic converter. X has been at the dealer for over a week now, they had to order the cc.

I'm grateful for the for the 7/70 emissions warranty, from what I can tell this is about $10k worth of work, but I'm at 66k miles and wondering what is next... I'm the original owner, first check engine light at 64k miles, no other issues before this. All maintenance done at the dealer when the car calls for it. I have no warranties otherwise.

I can only assume that the tanks are next, any other ideas of what I should be worried about? From what I've read catalytic converter's rarely go bad...

Urea tanks are covered up to 120k miles but it may be worth it to get a 3rd party warranty, one that covers gaskets and seals.

So the tanks are now covered if we are getting the temp sensor error?

I believe it falls under the California emissions law 7yr or 120k miles.
If that is out, there is a fix for the active tank using VW part, same part as x5 and thats under $300 and it bolts in i believe. ECS tuning sells it and few other places.

Ask your dealer about the CA emissions law and push for the coverage if they say no at first.

I live in Oregon so I don't think that will work.

Ozer, can you provide a reference for the 7 year 120k warranty? Everything I've read is that it is 7/70, including California. Oregon and PA fall under that also.

I just saw this in a BMW Warranty Inquiry on a X5 35d I was looking at:

the SCR Active Tank (Reservoir) limited warranty for defects in materials or workmanship has been extended to 10 year/120,000 mile as determined from
the original in-service date. This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusions that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warrant for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks. Please see Sl B01 23 16.

As I recall there are a dozen states that follow california emissions. Just thinking 'oh it say california and im not in california' may be a mistake

I suggest you open your warranty book or Google it. It would take me 40 seconds, but it's your car- you should check.

Hint: Oregon does

What was the in-service date of the X5 you were looking at? I bet this is for earlier pre-LCI (2009, 2010, and some early build 2011) diesels.
