2 REALLY annoying issues
2013 35i X5 M-Sport/Performance, upon cold start of several hours or anytime really regardless of weather there is a metallic rattle somewhere towards the front but who knows. a suggestion heard here and elsewhere was that its the wastegate and needs a new turbo SO... one of the recent visits yielded a replacement of the passenger side exhaust flap and tip due to "mechanical malfunction" the follow up visit with a different dealer yielded a replacement of the Turbo (unless there are two it SHOULD have resolved it BUT didnt). so i'm back to the other issue is the fuel gauge needle after full fill up goes to about 7/8 and never hits the full bar. one dealer looked reconnected the battery and said its fixed, the other actually replaced some sensor on the left side of the vehicle but issue still persists. ? |

pilot injection makes those engines sound a bit like diesels. a wastegate rattle sounds different. tends to disappear under load and reappears when you take the foot off the throttle. a bit like this - i used an extreme example so you don't need to second-guess what type of noise you're looking for:
https://youtu.be/DsKLNCRaBv4 on N54s you can adjust the actuator linkage for the wastegate, not sure about N55s but i'd be surprised if they did away with that. it could also be the solenoid that operates it. replacing the turbo should be your last plan of attack, really.

Here's the thing they already replaced the TURBO. I didn't have a chance to listen yet but it's as if two spoons were clanking against one another for the first several seconds and then it goes silent and I heard that on a '16 535 so maybe it's "normal" but a 50i doesn't do it so why mine? I am worried if I buy out the car after lease up in feb what happens if something related to this breaks

if it was a wastegate rattle, it'd be less likely to disappear after just a few seconds. unless you have a vacuum problem. no idea why they decided replacing the turbo is the best course of action. then again, trying to diagnose an engine over the internet is always tricky. but seeing how the turbo swap didn't fix your issue...
i have no advice on your lease. but if you feel you're getting yourself into trouble by buying the car, then maybe don't. all i can say is that i wouldn't trust either of the dealerships you visited with actually keeping your car in excellent working order. i'd expect a little more than just a bunch of wild and somewhat misguided stabs in the dark from an authorised service agent. especially if they quickly jump to conclusions that lead to replacements of expensive engine parts.
