Remote Start Option for your X
Very easy to do, just follow the directions and no problems... only about 2 hours total including tying up the cables and cleaning up. Everything you need (except for a few zip ties and the programming cable) is in the box. Here are links to the E70 pages on iDatalink: iDatalink - Search iDatalink - ADS-BM1 There are also 2 install videos in the support section that show you the simple disassembly and install process. The complete kit can be found for <$500 on eBay and Amazon, which includes the Remote Start, 2 long distance (2500+ feet) remotes (a 2 way and a 1 way) and it also works with your BMW keyfob (3 presses of the Lock button) as well. *** You can add Smart Phone Control as well as other 3rd party remotes *** You will need the ADS-USB programming cable so you can program the system to your vehicle and also capture the BMW keyfob info. Also, IE for your browser, it will NOT work with Firefox, didn't try any others, but I believe IE is the only browser supported. Here is the programming cable you will need: iDatalink - ADS-USB Look on eBay, should be around $25... Simply disconnect 3 connections (2-CAS, brake switch) under the steering column, insert the 2 wiring harnesses, do the VERY SIMPLE web based config/programming, and you're done. No coding, no cut wires, no major disassembling of your X (kick panel & vent), and you can remove it at any time! Hi,
The system creates a copy of one of your BMW Keyfobs, stores it in the RS internal memory, and it uses this to access the security and start features as if you had placed a BMW keyfob in the slot. Your X will see the RS as Key#3 (assuming you have 2 keys) so you don't need a key to drive away. Just unlock the doors with the remote button and you can drive away with no BMW keyfob needed. So, it kinda provides CA Start for those who don't have it, as far as the engine start process is concerned. (You will need to insert your BMW keyfob in the slot periodically to charge it, if you don't have CA.) You will have to set your seat, mirrors, audio, climate, etc once you use the RS, as they will be stored with key #3. Your settings for #1 and #2 won't change at all. It doesn't mess with CA at all, still functions as normal after the engine is running but not during the start process itself (only a few seconds). You will of course have to have a BMW keyfob with you to use it as normal for the doors/locks... In this case it will use the settings for the #1/#2 keyfob as usual. I saw no risk, that's why I installed it in my X5. Thanks, John

Unreal! I've been looking for a remote start for a while now and it drives me nuts how our 'luxury' BMWs don't have it but a new Chevy Cruz does...

...because if you don't even at least pretend to care about the environment then it's no big deal to allow running your engines while there's not even anyone in the car?
...or because there appears to be no logical reason why it should even be offered? i mean, what exactly is it for? or what does it do that a webasto or eberspaecher can't do better?

Yeah.... Those look much less invasive and easy to install (NOT!)
BTW it also looks like they are burning fuel to create the heat. So explain how they are more environmentally friendly? Why not a block heater, oh wait, if I'm away from an electrical supply I can't use it. Thanks, but I'll keep my simple install and let 5 minutes at idle do the warm up/cool down of my car, the way it was designed to be operated. Thanks though, John

there's a bit of a difference between running an entire engine or a comparably small auxiliary heater in both electricity and fuel consumption, in addition to the fact that aforementioned auxiliary heater also negates the need to run a cold engine at all. also, since most BMWs are designed for those options it's not *that* much more difficult to install and you can also control it from your smartphone or set times at which your heater comes on. so i'm still standing by what i said, there's nothing your remote start does that a webasto or eberspaecher doesn't do better. on top of that it's actually illegal in certain countries (like germany) to run your engine unnecessarily. and not even being inside the car while it runs constitutes such a situation. hence you don't get the option. it makes a lot of sense, really.

As mentioned by json above, it does get HOT (95F) as well as Cold (-15F) where I live too, and cooling the car is actually more attractive to me than heating it... i don't really see where there's room for an argument over this. i answered to a comment, namely
with a reply that's based on fact, not anecdotal evidence or personal preference. as you correctly point out, environmentalism hasn't reached your neck of the woods and for all i care you work within the law by modifying and operating your car in the way that you do. i have no interest debating that.
