I thought the $25 Lisle tool would do it.... then I remembered it doesnt work on the e70.

Can you describe how you managed getting the tool to work and how you rotated the engine? I have a 2011 35d and need to change a whineing tensioner pulley. Thanks

Ideally you'd want something that could grab 4 bolts on the crank pulley (aka harmonic balancer), like this:
. It's surprisingly tough to find, but search for N47 timing chain tool set. The workaround - a risky one, not OSHA approved, "hold my beer" type, - is to mount the belt as much as possible, position the tool and press the start button really quickly - the engine will rotate just enough to mount the belt, but won't start. The tool will likely fly off, so put piece of cardboard or something to protect the radiator. |
