DIY AC Belt Install 3.0SI MY 2008

Ok, this story has a happy ending. 2008 3.0SI needed a new water pump, while apart I decided to replace the two belts. The main belt is equipped with a spring loaded tensioner. Replacement on that belt is a snap, pun intended.

The AC belt is a challenge. The belt must be stretched onto the AC pulley and BMW makes a special tool #11 1 240, which grips the entire outer surface of the AC pulley which looks something like a tool offered by a company called KTC. This tool 'might work' but their listing does not include the engine used on my X5. However, their web site listed the tool out of stock and have not responded to email or phone. Their part number is A1408 and sold for $99.99 when last offered on eBay.

Stretching onto the vibration damper is not an option as the pulley has a very large outer flange.

BMW's tool is available via ECS Tuning at $190.00 and ten days delivery.

Several well intentioned folks suggested a tool made by Lisle, numbered 59370. This tool simply will not work on this AC pulley. See photos below. The Lisle tool assumes a rolled flange on the pulley and the Lisle tool is notched to fit that flange. This is what mechanically holds the tool in place.

Among the photos below is a pulley with a rolled outer edge. The Lisle tool is meant for this pulley, but the AC Pulley is 'flat' and the magnetic clutch is in the way.

Fortunately, the forward end of the crankshaft on my 3.0SI, terminates in a cast iron 22mm hex stub. A standard 22mm socket will fit the shaft. Since the engine turns over when the gearbox is in park and the ignition is on, it only makes sense that the engine can be mechanically rotated with the ignition off. Photo below.

Using a piece of steel strip, 1/8" x 1" I formed a U-shaped clamp about 2 inches long. The clamp loosely gripped the rear edge of the AC pulley and the outside edge of the multi-rib belt. Using hand pressure I held the clamp in place, rotated the vibration damper pulley in the CCW direction and in 10 seconds had the belt in place. A few rotations using a wood block as a guide ensured the belt was aligned on both pulleys.

Cost, essentially zero, I had the steel strip laying around the shop.

I do not have a business interest in any of the vendors mentioned above, but proudly admit to being avery satisfied customer of ECS Tuning, who supplied the belts, tensioner and Idler pulley for this job. Good folks!
