The starter was also replaced within the past couple of years. Sounds like they were chasing a weak start, might have been the alternator all along. I'll check into that.

Yeah sounds like the same exact thing I went through. I replaced my battery first , it worked for about a hour. In not sure if AutoZone or any other parts store can check your alternator output while installed. There is a way you can get the voltage reading off your dash. Just Google hideden menu or look thru this one
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=545502 . I used this when I was trouble shooting my alternator issue. If you do end up replacing the alternator make sure it's the correct size. I have the climate control in the rear seats so my X took the larger alternator.
