Personal settings, Trip meter, Time, etc resetting

Could this possibly be caused by a dying key battery?

My wife's key keeps giving her battery warnings on the dash when she starts our 2009 35D. Twice in the last couple of months the date, time, and trip meter settings have been reset when using her key.

Are these related? Is the car not properly recognizing her key due to the week battery, or are the random resets indicative of a larger systems issue?

Any insight appreciated. I admit I didn't due much searching on the topic before posting. So if this is well documented, please feel free to berate me and flame me.

Sounds like you're on the right track. If you are getting a key battery warning , I would start by changing the key battery first.

Normally the time/date reset is a dying vehicle battery. But I'd start with the key battery since it's cheap and go from there.

Vehicle battery is less than a year old. The issue seems to be happening with both keys, even though only one of them is reporting a dead battery.

I need to get my INPA setup working correctly so I can scan the modules for errors.

Are both keys near the vehicle while you are trouble shooting? Have you tried to replace the battery in the key yet? It's just a flat watch style battery. Easy fix!

Well, despite the fact that the battery was replaced shortly before I bought the car, this now appears to almost certainly be an issue with the vehicle battery.

Yesterday I had to take the rear door panel off to repair the vapor barrier. The door was left open for extended periods multiple times throughout the day. Later in the evening, we got in the car to run some errands and as the motor first started a warning flashed across the check control about additional charging load. Then I noticed the mpg and trip meter were reset.

My wife then informed me that the last time it happened to her, it was when she spent a while with the door open switching out child seats.

I'll have to confirm with some voltage checks, but it seems the battery is weak, or perhaps the wrong model.

Did BMW or a Indy shop replace the battery? The new battery has to be registered. May be your voltage regulator on your alternator. I changed mind before , it worked for about 1 year then I ended up replacing the complete alternator. I got mine from AutoZone. It was a special order. The alternator was an OE that came from the original manufacturer. So don't fall for the go to the dealer to get an alternator hype. The one I ordered from AutoZone comes with a lifetime warranty also.

The battery was registered at EAG in Knoxville, TN. The receipt from doing so was included in the folder I got when I bought the car.

The starter was also replaced within the past couple of years. Sounds like they were chasing a weak start, might have been the alternator all along. I'll check into that.

Yeah sounds like the same exact thing I went through. I replaced my battery first , it worked for about a hour. In not sure if AutoZone or any other parts store can check your alternator output while installed. There is a way you can get the voltage reading off your dash. Just Google hideden menu or look thru this one http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=545502 . I used this when I was trouble shooting my alternator issue. If you do end up replacing the alternator make sure it's the correct size. I have the climate control in the rear seats so my X took the larger alternator.

Oh yeah you'll have to unlock that voltage menu by inputting a certain number. If I remember it has something to do with your vin adding/ subtracting some numbers.
