CAS question for 2013 X5M
I've searched through the site to find the answer to this question but keep finding conflicting answers. I bought a second key for my 2013 X5M with CAS (ordered from BMW with proof of ownership), it works fine to unlock and start the vehicle (in the key slot only). How do I get the CAS features to work with this new key? I don't have a key symbol on the steering column. I do have iCarly programming ability, but that's it. I was told by the guy I bought it from that no programming was necessary but BMW says it is indeed needed. I don't want to drop another $200 on this if I can help it. Any help? |

From what I've read... and am going to go through myself in the near future, you will need it programmed at the dealer. Or by someone with a complete BMW software suite. Originally your x5 would have had 2 keys coded to it using CAS. The CAS module only allows two keys to be used for comfort access so the one that is missing/broken will need to be replaced via coding with the one you bought.
^That's what I've come up with and is the reason we haven't bought a second key yet for our newly acquired E70. It's on the list of things to do, but $500+ is going towards other maintenance first.

That makes sense. So I guess my iCarly won't come in handy with this job. Are there any members out there that do remote coding? I'd rather pay them than the stealership!

Do any of the DIY coding tools work here too?

No.
Well, there are, but $$$, definitely more than dealer rate. |

I will unfortunately end up just paying the dealer I'm sure.

No, not trying to sound cool, just was looking for help and a specific answer to my specific model.
CAS=Comfort Access System? No?.... Misguided?.... maybe My question has been answered, thanks. |

The CAS is the Car Access module, it does handle most of the comfort access duties but its main function is key control and general access functions. If you're familiar with BMW's in general it would compared to the EWS module from previous generations.
As mentioned already, you will need to have BMW software and know how in order to adjust the comfort access key allocations within the CAS module. There is no other way to activate the new CA key. |
