Get a code reader diagnostic tool that can speak the language of the vehicle- Carly Pro app with their bluetooth connector is a great value in my opinion.

Check your operating temp and verify that you are over 75* C. Thermostat fails open and causes lots of issues.

Understand the technology and the vehicle, it's technical but not rocket science.

Use quality parts and correct fluids. Catch problems early.

Almost identical engine in 335d, it's an M57 ya know.

I've got a long way to go to understand it, but I'm working on it. I'm usually pretty good with technology though. The Air Force trained me to fix avionics systems on aircraft so I speak binary, octal and hex, and understand the flow of electrons pretty well and the components involved. I was a car audio car before that.

I'll check out the code reader mentioned. Definitely need something.

I have a 2009 X5 35D with the EGR and DEF delete, with a stage 2 tune. It's been great thus far. I'm in process of replacing #6 injector. I would highly suggest being sure your partitions don't leak under the hood. Great ideas on how to fix, just search partitions. The down pipe you mention, is the only one I know of. It's a little more tricky than the 335D. You have to get into the sub frame to get it done. I live in SC too, and the place I had it done is in Charlotte. They did an awesome job. I spent about $1800 for all of it, including the tune. I started throwing codes for the DEF tanks. It was going to cost about as much to replace those as to do the delete, which is why I did it. It's a great car, I'm sure you will enjoy.

Is this "tune" a custom job or an out of the box type deal? If it was purchased what's the brand of it?

FWIW guys I bought this to refill my DEF tanks. Works awesome and screws right onto the top of the 2.5gal tanks you can get just about anywhere.

I too am watching this delete saga, just turned 50k on the 2011 X5d and while they've replaced just about every diesel related emissions part, at some point it'll be on my dime and I'm thinking this truck would rock fully deleted.

That's the one I bought. Super easy. When I get some ducks in a row I won't be refilling DEF anymore, but I'm a ways out on that. Got to pick and choose carefully on what projects I take on at the moment. We have a rewards program at work and I'm about to cash in on $600 worth of gift cards for Crutchfield to get the speakers I'm going with. So project #1 is to buy replacement speakers, add my amp and sub to get the sound on the inside right before I start with the tune, EGR/SCR delete, etc.

Plus that'll buy me some more time to research options on EGR delete/exhaust parts.

I looked at a stage 2 tune, but decided that I wanted more stages.

So I went with a Stage 7 tune.

More stages are better, so when you talk to tuners ask about adding more stages to the tune.



Would be nice to discuss actual tune parameters, and be able to compare 'products' across tuners....

Finally found a speaker bracket made for the door panels to place a standard aftermarket 4" speaker in the OEM 3 screw opening. Figured I'd share.

Going with the Focal K2 4" component set up front, and since I don't have the stock tweeter opening on the rear panels, gonna have to go with a coaxial 4" in the rear. Then a single 12" sub in the back powered by my trusty MTX 5400 thunder amp. Really looking forward to this install!
