Larger Fuel tank?

I wanted to ask as I couldn't find any info if anyone has retrofitted a larger or auxiliary fuel tank to their X5.

The reason I ask is I tow often with my X5M. With its 22.5 gallon tank when your in rural western areas you have to stop every town which are spread about 80 miles apart (incidentally that was how far trains could go between water refills). Mainly cause running 160 miles between fill ups is pushing the car to fumes. I'd like a 30-40 gallon tank if possible. Yes the X5M with trailer is getting about 8-10mpg.

I doubt there's an option for a larger capacity tank, as the original one is already of a weird shape in order to 'fill' all available space.

Carry a gas can. If you are towing you can probably make room in the trailer.

Yeah, that is an option but it’s more of a pain to use gas can. As you still have to stop an extra time to pour in the fuel, and the epa compliant ones sold here take about 10min to put in 5 gallons in a tank and you have to hold it up the entire time. Plus the tanks off gas and it’s easy to spill, fuel or pick up fuel on the exterior form setting it on the ground., so storing it in a trailer makes it smell like gas, What would be ideal is a 30 gallon fuel tank. Guess they just don’t make one for the x5 maybe a custom mod...

Buy a custom mod nozzle for a gas container. Get a 5 gal metal one, attach it to the trailer at the hitch (outside)

The VP racing fuel cans are nice too because they aren’t regulated. Has a nice useable spout and seals up good.

Doesn’t really answer your question though.

Oh, man. I'm glad I don't have this problem with my diesel. I can go almost 650 miles on the interstate.

As others have said, there was only 1 tank option for the e70.

Having said that, there are some spaces under the chassis that you might be able to fill with custom fuel pods. For example, there's a 4.5gallon SCR tank that lives under the drivers side rear passenger's feet on the diesel model. I would think there isn't much occupying that space on the gassers. Another 4.5 gallons of fuel would be a good start for your issue.
