Anyone ever replaced a rear cupholder?

The fold out cup holder in the center armrest of my X5 recently self destructed (plastic cover broke, and retaining clip inside went flying never to be seen again). My dealer wanted $350 installed to replace it, which I politely declined. Bought a nice clean replacement from my local recycler today. From the looks of it, I am going to have to disassemble the armrest, remove the cupholder insert, then unscrew the bezel from the old unit and pull it out and replace it. Not too daunting, but kind of a PITA.

If it matters, my SAV has third row seats and the adjustable and reclining 2nd row seats.

Anyone ever taken this on before? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Crash

I’m sorry, I can’t be of any help. But the perpetual, futile, disasters that are BMW cupholders are sort of comical. It’s just not that hard, but they’ve always either ignored the feature or tried to make it too fancy.

1. I forgot there were cupholders

2. Like Audio, I think BMW engineers resent the task of designing the features: you should not listen to music, you should not drink, when driving a BMW.

Not being able to use your VIN to pull up specific data...I did a generic search for rear cup holder on a facelift e70 X5 35i and found the link below. If it is not correct...feel free to click on the "bread crumb" links at the top and start over entering your VIN...then doing a search to see if you can find a DIY:

Thanks for the link, Qsilver7. Big help!

The only thing it doesn't show in the picture is that you have to carefully unscrew the frame where the leather is attached to it. But that's pretty obvious once you get the cupholder frame cover off.

ard: This is actually a 100% accurate observation.

The picture enclosed was from when I toured the Munich factory in 2005. The guy who served as our tour guide was a retired BMW design engineer (sadly I forgot his name). At the time, my wife's car was an E39 5 series. When I asked him why the "can holders" those cars had in the front console were so lousy, he was completely mortified that I would even ask the question.

He basically said that "you americans" always have to eat and drink when we drive, but their Engineers put their work into making the drive itself the enjoyable part. He went on to say we should love the drive until we get to where we can enjoy the food and drink. Suffice it to say I was humbled, but he did have a very good point.

Much respect for having the courage to even ask that question to him directly!

If I were there, I would have asked why the "can"holders in the e36 M3 were actually smaller than any drink can made, barring the little 7oz Tropicana juices.

LOL... Good point.

Maybe now we know why Red Bull is so popular in Europe.
