radiator fan question

Since we bought our x5 about 30 days, ive been chasing down some coolant leaks. During the process there has been times i had the car ideling for a while and i have not seen the fan turn on any of the times ive ben working on it.

the outside air is pretty cold, would you expect to see the fan kick in on these with the car ideling with ambient temps around 32-40?

or are these one of those cars were the phone only kicks in usually in the hotter months of the year?

I have no CEL's or codes.

Car is a 2007 e70 x5 3.0i

Same thing happened with my 08 3.0. I was never able to track it down. I just made sure when I was in traffic to push the AC button and that kicked the fan on.

Not always but I new the fan would kick on if I turned the ac compressor on and seeing as how I was working so much, it was a small insurance policy that the car was cooling/fan being on when sitting in stop and go traffic until I had the time to hunt down the issue. Then the car got totaled before I could actually fix it.

The secondary fan has a program of certain temp that will kick on. When the AC is running the temp is a lower temp it doesn't run always.

Use the hidden menu or a scanner to monitor coolant temps to see if the coolant is even hot enough instead of playing a guessing game.
