Rain is killing me

Need water ingress help.

2013 e70 3.0 LHD

Heavy rain is resulting in electrical malfunctions. Sunroof drains are clear, in the rear and front both drain and don’t pool. no water in the rear bins by the fuse box. I pulled the headliner and the rear roof isn’t seeing any water although it had been.

engine bay drains in front of the firewall are clean and draining very quickly. They were a little a slow and I thought cleaning them out would solve the issue but alas no.

I’m not finding water ANYWHERE in the interior but still getting nailed with the errors. iDrive screen flickers, blinkers skip, hvac acts up.

Pulled the carpet by the FRM module and it’s all dry
Pulled the junction box down behind glove box and dry.
Is there anywhere else water can be entering?

Maybe behind the hvac controls??

I’m at my wits end… maybe someone here knows where to look.

Could water leaking into the engine bay cause this??

Thanks in advance

That looks like it all points to the DME connector, maybe try pulling it on and off a few times and see if that helps.

+1

I seem to recall that there are drains out of these, that can get clogged.

On the bottom left and right are on each side a small grommet at the flat bottom, with a small hole on the side, clean those with a smal peace of wire.

I saw the same on my car when I changed the filters.

Also check of the covers are right in Place, they also have some kind of drain on the side with a plastic thing that moves. They must be placed correct in the fender whole.

Other wise you will get a whole lot of water in the space below the cover, the small drain at the bottom is not big enouf to drain that amount of water.

(Sorry for the bad English)

Ill make a picture in a moment.

Where my finger that plastic peace should move towards the fender. At the driverside the plastic was block and a lot af garbadge had filled the whole.

My grommet is missing at the passender side.

If there is a lot of water in the whole, the electric conrectors will go under water and cause problems.

I think you’re on to something, I touched the DME harness and the gong went off in the car. Coincidental timing or the culprit. I suspect water is getting into that wiring somehow between the junction by the IVM and the DME.

happen to know if there is a ground wire running through that wiring sleeve that runs over the top of the engine, causing a potential short to ground?

RE: the posts about the gutter systems and engine bay drains, I have cleaned these thoroughly, water is definitely not standing in there although it had been earlier when I started diagnosing this issue.

I would say try the garden hose on the front window, let it run down and keep checking were the water is going and if the wiringharnes is getting wet.

Just made an account to come on and say I’m currently having the exact same problem, with the same frustrations. PO of car had sunroof replaced and liftgate module replaced, and those drains are clean. Cars always been fine if the weather is dry for a few days, but any rain storm killed me. Cleaned firewall drains, let the car dry, no issues at all the evening of the cleaning/drying.

Go out the next morning to move it, and to my huge shock, errors galore. iDrive screen flicker is terrible, blinkers don’t work, climate control issues, etc etc. same exact issues

Please keep posted if you figure out the issue with yours, and I will do the same. It seems feasible that one of the DME connections could be screwy since I had to contort the wires to get the tub out to access the firewall drains. Will go check after it quits raining

Check the connectors under the hood for corrosion or if the connectors are wet inside.

This are realy pain in the A problems.

I Made pictures from the harnas that is running from the passender side to the dme. If water could come in the plastic shield it could come at the dme.

Also I would take a peak on the rear end of the car left en right behind the panels if you see something there, that could cause a probleem.
