Dealer charges battery cable replacement over $800, parts and labor??

Does this sound right? Supposedly, the cable comes with a module too, so exactly which cable are they referring to? Positive or Ground?

Most likely the positive cable. If you have to buy the kit from them it comes with the pyro portion of the cable that explodes in a rear end collision to disconnect the battery.

It can certainly get expensive as a dealer repair. Can be cheaper at an indy or exponentially cheaper as a DIY repair.

Interesting.. But if it comes with a module, what module are they referring to? I was guessing it was the ground cable because there looks to be a module right there at the connection point to the battery, whearas, the power cable is connected through a distribution box.

Do you not know how to search here?!?

I'm not jsut being a dick, there are 100 posts that would address your question instead of your having to wait for someone to post up an answer.

Could be the IBS, or intelligent battery sensor.

But even more important WHY WOULDNT YOU ASK THE DEALER "WHAT PART ARE YOU SAYING NEEDS REPLACEMENT?"

It would also be useful to understand why they want to replace this mystery cable.... Was the car in an accident? Is it having other issues? Did they find error codes relating to the IBS or something else???

All of the above is true. Ask the dealer all of those questions to find out the who/what/when/where/why. Don't be afraid to ask questions. They want $800 for a repair. You have a right to know what you would be paying for.

Apparently, I should be afraid to ask questions, look what we have here?

Hey Ard, I hope he sends you flowers on Valentine's day.

I kinda get the sense that you are working issues along several fronts: trying to figure it out yourself; asking questions here; having the dealer give you a diagnosis; dealing with a raft of errors on carly, some of which may be unrelated..etc..etc

you drop in from time to time with a specific question which you think is the question you need answered.

The problem is that diagnosing issues- especially on a newly acquired car that may have been neglected for 100k miles- can be rather holistic: it takes a while to fully index the issues and decide which is causing what.

From the 15 threads you have open... ...my recollection is that you have both ODB issues AND can bus faults.

Battery, charging issues, IBS, shorts can all lead to odd, spurious and seemingly unrelated (and not repeatable) faults. But these are separate from OBD faults- especially if they come back after clearing AND are accompanied by driveability issues.

I think you have two issues. OBD and batt/charging/can/electrical

my 2 cents

Did I miss something? Getting info from them would help us to help you.

I don't always agree with the way Ard (can be pretty negative and abrasive) presents his suggestions, but he knows his e70's. Much more so than I.

At any rate, good luck with your X5, hope you get it sorted. Think I'll bow out of this particular support attempt.
