I have the instructions somewhere, but unfortunately we're in the middle of moving so it would take some time to track them down.
To be honest, I tried to follow the positioning instructions and then ignored them. It puts the bars wwaaayyy too close together. Depending on what you're carrying it might be fine, but I was transporting a canoe and didn't feel comfortable only having like a foot and a half between the bars. I left the rear where the instructions said (I think it was just behind the rear support) and move the front closer to the front of the vehicle. There was no significant noise with the bars in the "wrong" position. I don't recall seeing torque, loosen, re-torque in the instructions. I forget exactly how many miles, but you are supposed to check torque every so often during your trip.

The underside of the bars has stickers with pictures on them showing which one is the front and rear. The front bar has plastic fins on the underside.

The instructions says to install it at least this far from point a and blah blah blah. In the end, it looks pretty similar to this when both are installed.
