35d Good or bad?
We haven't driven it yet, as its a considerable drive away. But any reason Not to consider the 35d (inherent problems, reliability issues, etc). Anything else you want add is appreciated, thanks..

I've had a 2012 X5d for 3 years now (previous owner is also an Xoutpost member) and it has by far been the most problem-free, reliable X5 I've owned. I've driven X5's for over 13 years, previously owning a 2001 4.4 and a 2008 3.0.
And now I've jinxed myself

Reliability is good, IMO Some issues with emissions stuff. 60-80% it seems were covered in recalls. (?) Prolly will spend a few $$ in the first 200k for nox sensors and/or DPF cleaning. The 35s have water pump problems. Is it a wash? Dunno

Cut out dpf, egr...chip up in safe mode... you get more than 300hp from diesel. Fly

09 X5 Diesel Sport (Active suspension package), my problems have been dying battery, tie rod replacement (whole arm),both from lower control arms (dealership),strut mount towers, engine bay rain guides (3 pieces), diesel glow plug module and 6 plugs, SCR injector valve. Had truck a year, with 62k, now at 95k, and literally, put about 4K into truck minus 2k on X5M wheels and tires. Now granted I do 90% of all repairs, and drive my diesel freeway atleat 20 Miles @85 mph everyday. These trucks have to be driven, and driven hard (blew out carbon). I have had 7 bimmers, and hands down best BMW vehicle yet. Best thing is, through FCPeuro, all my parts have a LIFETIME WARRANTY!!

I would say run away unless
(1) you think $2500 a year is normal for maint and repairs (2) you are a good home mechanic |

These cars are pretty awesome deal considering the new G series X5 is due out soon.
I'm looking for a 2nd X5 and am also considering the 35d or 35i. Currently back on the road with the 4.8 and love it. |

After almost 9 years of ownership, and 130k miles
Here are some of the things you could run into, the ones in bold have personally affected me 1. Active tank, SCR + DEF injector 2. Nox sensors 3. Thermostat 4. Glowplugs and module 5. Throttle valve 6. EGR cooler 7. Exhaust temp sensors (pre and post DPF, high and low pressure EGRs) 8. Differential pressure sensors 9. Boost sensor 10. Battery - Now on my 3rd battery 11. Idler pulley bolt 12. Leaky turbo oil line 13. Pressure converters 14. Injector 5 + 6 due to water infiltration (broken bulkhead partition) 15. Parking Brake actuator (EMF Module) 16. driveshaft (depending on year) 17. Adaptive drive valve block 18. Door lock actuator and bowden cable 19. EMF switch 20. Peeling door handle trim, steering wheel trim 21. Stripped plastic gear for seat thigh rest motor on passenger side 22. oil level sensor (35D still has a dipstick )23. CIC screen backlight Scared yet? Those are just the things I can think of that break, not even counting maintenance like 1. Tranny fluid + pan 2. Water pump + belts 3. Differential and transfer case fuild 4. coolant 5. Tie rods, Lower control arm bushings, sway bar endlinks 6. Rear air suspension bags Coles notes: Still a blast to drive, cannot easily find something to replace it that handles family hauling duties but you can still chuck into a corner and have it handle like a sports sedan. Keep up on maintenance though.
