Please Help ! 07 E70 3.0si tapping/ticking (is my motor toast?)
Details: My X5 has 130k on the dash the sound follows the rpm I can hear the sound on start up car starts quick but hard Can't feel any power loss - I hit the gas and she goes. rpms dip when coming to a stop with ac off. sound is constant from start up to shutdown I've changed both cam position sensors cleaned vanos solenoid and swapped cleaned MAF changed ignition coils on 5 and 6 changed all plugs changed pre cat lambda bank 2 codes I currently have but may be unrelated (not sure) system too lean bank 2 multiple misfire bank 2 Valve cover leaking (replacing this week) I do have an aftermarket warranty (wynns) but I need my car for work so dropping it off for days isnt an option unless totally necessary. I've embedded a video of the sound (I think) Please help. https://youtu.be/ecRb3zuWxXA Last edited by Leodalvar; 08-02-2018 at 10:31 PM. |

why not have a real mechanic look at it? futzing with codes is one thing, but engine noises can be a whole different $tory. |

Timing chain tensioner? hurry before it breaks your guides or worse (if thats the issue). Specify where from the engine the sound is coming from. Front, rear, lower, upper....

@Ard yeah I'm bringing it in for the valve cover. I told my mechanic about the sound he said he'd check it out. I'm just trying to make sure the sound isnt from something I can do myself to avoid a tear down and the down time.
@alpinex thank you that's an easy diy that I should probably do anyway I'm going to give it a shot. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk |

Oh, and it sounds like it's coming from the front area of the motor. I'm going to pick up a stethoscope to narrow it down.

Looks like it's the dealer after all... The motor basically spilled its guts out on the way to work this morning. Good thing for road side and warranties. Let's see how this turns out.
