Can't fill up 2007 X5

Any help will be appreciated.

I have a 2007 X5 and when I go to fill up the pump stops at 1/2 tank. I've tried the various tricks with no luck. I've read that it could possibly be needing a new 'Charcoal Canister'. Does such a part exist for this vehicle? If so part numbers would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Here are three great online part databases every BMW owner should have at their access. Click any of the links and enter the last 7 digits of your VIN (or select the appropriate info that describes your BMW) and you can then use either the search fields (typing in a key word), search using a part nbr, or work your way through the multiple diagram groups.

  1. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select
  2. http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/
  3. https://www.etkbmw.com/

Using the BMWfans.info site...I selected a generic e70 X5 3.0 (hopefully you don't have a diesel...you don't mention your model)...and then I typed "charcoal" in the USAGE searchbox and this is what comes up: Search result: charcoal ... if you click the link it reveals multple diagrams with "charcoal" in the name...and one of them is the diagram you see below.

Hope this helps...if not now...perhaps in the future if you need to order parts/part nbrs or need info for construction/deconstruction or need to know what other BMW models use the same part nbr or need to know if a part nbr changed mid production.

Anyone think is actually IS the 'canister'?!?!?!?

Pre-2004 cars I recall this might be an issue, but didnt think it was an E70 problem

Anyone??

How do we know the fuel tank isn't full and the gauge is off? Any way to test that?

Maybe knock on the tank? (With your hands) The sound would change.

You can check the function of the fuel level senders (in the tank) if you UNLOCK the cluster and perform TEST 6.

I do believe the IKE (instrument cluster) info for the e70 (new gen bmws) is the same as it was for the previous generation e38/e39/e46/e53 when you run the hidden cluster tests.

The display is different but the information is either the same or very similar.

See the explanation of TEST 06 in the info below (which was for the previous e38/e39/e46/e53 generation)...but again, it's probably similar to the e70 generation:

{note fuel gauge & TEST 6 numbers align...the gauge shows approx 1/2 tank of gas...and TEST 6 shows only 2.8 liters on the left side of the tank and 35.2 liters of gas on the right side of the tank and approx 38.1 liters of gas in total}

{the pic below shows PHASE 1 which means both fuel level senders are operating correctly}

Helpful info! Hopefully e_jax5 will be able to check this.
I went through the menu on mine and found 3 submenus for #6, same as the E60:
  • 06.00 – TANK L R S (fuel level readouts from left sensor, right sensor and estimated sum)
  • 06.01 – TANK-ANZ PH (Fuel gauge reading in litres, tank phase)
  • 06.02 – TANK-ADC L R (The raw resistance values returned by the left and right fuel level sensors)
As you can see, based on 85 litres fuel capacity, I'm sitting at approx 37% both on the dashboard needle and the hidden menu numbers.

Note: I had the battery disconnected a few days ago to prevent the air suspension from turning on while working on the windshield washer pump under the front passenger fender.

Toothbrush... ... thanks for the additional info that updates my old gen info so that it could be compared with the new gen instrument cluster...which makes it clearer to understand for this forum.

Okay.

I ran the test as suggested above. I've included photos. It appears as the Right Fuel Level Sensor might be bad. This is based on QSilver7 states in his post. So my question is: Is this a labor intensive job to replace this Sensor? Is it in the fuel tank? Do I have a full tank of gas when I refuel and am stopped at half tank>

Thanks for all the help!!
