Connecting an IPhone 7+ on IOS 11.4.1 to a 2011 X5 30d M Sport

Hi, does anyone know how to connect the above successfully for either telephone calls of music streaming?
When trying to set up I get as far as setting a passcode and accepting it on the phone, it then asks for me to allow contacts to be synced and then I just get the swirl symbol and it doesn't complete. once I have done that I can accept calls via the steering wheel but can only make calls from the phone (and then talk through the car).
As for streaming music, connecting via lightning cable in the arm rest wont work, just get the swirl symbol, aux will work with lightning converter but it will not connect via bluetooth.

any ideas guys?

For music and talking you can get btstreaming gor few dollars. Put your phone on central screen and watch tv or youtube online with sound through speakers. Of course, if you have unlimited internet.

Check your vin here https://www.bmwvin.com/ and look for combox or mulf.

Mulf is the older system that is USB and BT phone only. But the USB is really only for the older ipods. BT music can be added with a tune2air. https://www.amazon.com/Bovee-WMA3000...s=bmw+tune2air

Combox is the newer system that does both bluetooth phone and music. It can be retrofited for not much more than the tune2air if you can diy and code.

Both systems allow steering wheel control and song skips. The combox can switch to different phones from the idrive screen.

Do some of your contact names have emojis in them? I learned that iDrive has trouble syncing when contacts have emojis in them and can't sync them.

Michelle you’re right. It was an issue with emoticons. My phone name had 2 📱 in it and that was what was stopping it from connecting. Once I removed them and went to the TEL bit in menu it was already connected. Working for calls and streaming Apple Music, steering controls work too. Thank you 👍

It is written in manual. Words with unstandart letters could not be synced or there will be gap.
