DIY Plug Change BAD turn...

Hi,

Decided to tackle the DIY plug/coil change on my '08 4.8 (99k miles) today, and started with the evil rear driver's side to get the worst one out of the way first...
Thanks to all of the helpful hints from others, I was able to get the coil off and out pretty easily. This had me a bit concerned as it pulled up off of the plug without much effort at all.

Once I got it out of the hole it had oil around the end about an 1" high
Valve covers leaking like crazy!

No sign of leaks on the outsides of the covers, but obviously a ton around the plug openings.

Would this be a good time to do the Valve Stem Seals, while in there, as well?
They aren't leaking (smoking yet) but figure it's just a matter of time.

Thanks,
John

If it’s not smoking, I wouldn’t do the valve stem seals yet. It’s major surgery and the risk for a screw up is high. Since the seals are still doing their job, I would keep them pliable and happy with a bottle ATP AT-205 ReSeal each oil change.

Hi Entropy,

Nope, no smoke, and I change the oil religiously every 3000 miles...
Also, I don't drive a lot, so I'm not idling in traffic much which seems to accelerate the process of the breaking down the VSS, from what I've read.

Will pick-up a bottle of ATP AT-205.

Thanks for the advice,
John

DIY Plug Change BAD turn...

Just clarifying. Are you going to replace the valve cover gasket?

Sorry about that, yes, I'm replacing both of them (N62).
I pulled coils on each bank just to be sure they were both leaking.
It's the same situation on both sides...

Thanks.
