It sounds like you are headed in the right direction!
I was going to post to answer your original question: NO... and also to NOT BOTHER with the stock RSE remote - its the most bizarre, inexcusable and frustrating piece of plastic I've ever seen! After attempting to use it once, I threw it in the bin and haven't touched it since!
The remainder of this post is All Editorial!...
Yes that whole RSE design is a FAIL; you cannot operate it effectively from the front for younger kids that are in car seats...
The only way was to get the dvd in and running yourself BEFORE beginning your trip...
NOW the kids are older and have figured out how to change dvd's themselves, and what the button symbols mean so they can stumble through the menus and get it playing 95% of the time.
ALL that said, even though the screen is not very up to date, that RSE has been INVALUABLE for my boys to watch tv (each with hard wired headphones) on long trips, making travel much more tolerable. And quiet for mom and dad

Especially so we can listen to music up front. They don't mind the screen.
WAY Better than them fighting over a tablet, or having it constantly falling off the armrest, etc.
