In retrospect, I'm sure you are correct. The failing compressor likely just wasn't firming up the air bags enough. This resulted in a softer sprung ride ( and lots of z-axis-like movement)
I just wanted to share the experience since I haven't come across any other documentation of this relatively simple and low cost fix. One that had such dramatic impact on ride quality.
None of the shops in our area...(dealer as well as long standing Indies) suggested looking at the airbags when we discussed the deteriorating ride quality.
