Learn something new every day!
Now the fun part, after leaving the repair and nearly home (10+ miles away) check engine light appears and the ambient temp sensor on the cluster is reading 120*f. But it was only 65*f at the time. Scan the X5 and come back with 5 errors and all are about the ambient temp sensor, the windshield and HVAC. Clear the error and it goes away for about 5 minutes and then returns to displaying 120*f and CE light on. Scan again and again, same 5 errors. Came to find out that the windshield heating grid/wires in the bottom portion of the windshield is directly connected to the ambient sensor system and affects the use of the heating, and the HVAC too. Why it throws a CE is beyond me but it does. Needless to say the glass repair (since they drill the crack to stop it, went into one of the wires and basically destroyed it! So forget the repair, now it's time for a new windshield. If you decide to repair your windshield NEVER have them repair anything in the "black" area at the bottom of the glass or your just throwing money away! Figured I would post this as a PSA since this oddity happened to me!

Odd. I wonder if one of the sensors screws up the calculation for intake air temp?
(Look at IAT, does it look off?) Would then impact DME calculations on operating parameters>>>CEL Ive bee DIYing my crack repairs. Pretty simple.. and I dont drill it. the crack itself is enough of a path for the cyanoacrylate. $10-15 at the auto store. Have one in the glove box of my DD actually. |

I bought my car with a honkin' crack from one edge to the other. Just been sitting on it during the winter, and as soon as I know there won't be more salt on the road, I'm going to call my insurance and pay the glass deductible...

That sounds plausible! Happen to know if Carly would be able to display that? If not I'll have to figure out inside ISTA/D after I get home today from work.

I got a crack just under the passenger windshield in Wyoming; I think I remember the hit. I don't think I have a heated windshield. Anyway, I didn't notice it until I stopped to fill up and cleaned the windshield. That crack traveled about 8" in the next week or so.
Insurance company wanted to repair it at first but then acquiesced to having it replaced. At Safelite. No other option. Complicating matters is that I was across the country in Reno. I remembered commercials from my youth for a glass replacement company in Reno. How's that for clever and effective advertising? $278 and I got a better and nicer windshield than I had before. Much better option than having no choice with who works on my X5.
