My plan is to go ahead and purchase a complete strut rebuild kit and do both front sides. (Will tackle rear later!) Is there a one-stop US-based rebuild kit? I've seen several kits on Ebay but they all ship from China---would rather shop locally and get parts faster!

No problem. Happy to contribute to the forums, though there are more knowledgeable people on here than me. I replaced the top strut bearings, yes. It was not happy after the foam failed. Might have been okay reusing, but as I mentioned I replace it all. I don't want to go back in there. No idea about top vs bottom longevity. My top ones were basically gone, the bottom ones were still, technically, present but definitely not a reusable part.
Can't help you with kits unfortunately. I ordered everything from FCP euro piecemeal. If servicing only the struts (not replacing) my parts total from them at the time (10/29/2018) was about $160.
