e70 35d "rest" activation?

All, I was wondering if someone might have an answer for me. While waiting for my girlfriend's train to get in, I accidentally activated the "rest" function, that continues blowing climate control for about 30 mins after you get out of the car. All winter I had been trying to figure out how to activate it, but yesterday the screen literally said "rest" to the right of the fan level. I think I pressed the fan key, with the ignition off, and the key in the slot still, but I can't seem to manage to replicate it yet. Does anyone know how this is done?

On my 3 series, instead of the "AC max" button, it was a rest button, and that would run the heat in the car for a while in the winter while I ran in to grab groceries or the like. It's not as useful in the summer but it would probably keep fresh air circulating at least!

Did you look in the owner's manual? I ask because I remember seeing it mentioned when I was first reviewing it after getting my X5.

I've read through mine, but didn't see it mentioned. I'll look again!

With engine running, press start/stop button once to turn off ignition & keep on "Accessories", then simply push the bigger fan symbol to turn on REST function.

Depending on climate control settings, it may not engage (ie you don't want to recover engine heat if it's 90 degrees outside)... May also not work if the engine is cold

Yes, check your owners manual for the RESIDUAL HEAT feature operation for your model.

There are restrictions...one of them is ambient temp, the battery has to be charged, and the car must be up to normal operating temps. (see 1st pic below)

When it's summer and you want to run the HVAC blower without the engine running...that is a different feature. That is the parked car ventilation features (see 2nd image below). This is accessed in iDrive (I believe under climate) if you have the CIC. You can do an immediate ventilation (blower will run up to 30 minutes)...or you can set up to two different venting "events" to operate at a later date:

Activating the REST function (when conditions permit its activation), is also a good way to test the auxiliary water pump's function.

This auxiliary water pump is used to circulate more coolant thru the heater core than would otherwise flow without it under some circumstances.

If the auxiliary water pump is not functioning correctly, you'll only have around 30 seconds to a minute of hot air after activating REST (Assuming engine coolant is fully warmed). With a properly functioning auxiliary water pump, you should have at least 5-10 minutes of pretty good heat coming from the vents that trails off to lukewarm in about 15 minutes, as this pump is used to continuously circulate hot coolant when using REST.
