active tank delivery unit
I have a 2010 x5 3.5d with only 57K miles. In the last few months it has had the active tank replaced (under extended 10 year warranty), the throttle body replaced, not under warranty, and now after a check engine light the dealer tells me it needs an active tank delivery unit. $1135 since it's under the active tank and that would need to be removed. I'd be interested if anyone has had a similar problem and any comments etc. Thanks. |

I'm guessing they are referring to the pump that sits on top of the SCR (active) tank. Doesn't look cheap as confirmed by your post. I've been staring at it sitting on the garage floor after rebuilding the SCR tank due to sensor failure. It's still out because I pulled the headlight bracket and headlight to refinish it while I was "in the area."
I think I would buy a used one if possible and put that in. And that's if I trusted dealers to give me the correct diagnosis. Did they tell you the exact codes for the CEL?

I would research the 10 year/120k mile extended warranty and make sure the item isn't covered. Like, it is a related component or part of the larger assembly. Of course, they won't volunteer this and you'll have to do the legwork yourself. Remember, there is a two year warranty on parts and if you're still within the 10 year/120k mile limit, I'd argue they still haven't fixed the problem. Make them tell you SPECIFICALLY what parts, i.e., part numbers, they want to replace.

Dealers lie.
Dealers are lazy Dealers can be pretty bad at diagnostics Dealers are expensive Why are you using a dealer? What makes you sure the problem is the 'active tank delivery unit" (there is no such part in your car). What makes you sure they didnt damage the part or something else when they touched it the first time? Have you asked for DETAILED information on their diagnosis? How are they diagnosing? Which specific codes? What test plans and results? First things first: ask them for the part number they are replacing. If it is the SCR delivery pump aka delivery module, (16-19-7-351-665) the part is $500. I assume also the dealer is lying about how much work it takes to install it. Anyone know what is actually involved? Can you get at the pump without fully removing the tank? |

Yep, Adam has, as always, been a little more direct and specific. But yeah, obtain absolute and exact details from your dealer. I'd recommend educating yourself about the involved systems beforehand so you can extract the required information from your dealer. What you report and what your dealer is apparently telling you makes no sense.

Thanks for all your responses, I had quickly looked up the part numbers when I got home and then confirmed with the dealer this morning. They said the code was 004804 (bet that's not correct) and the part number is 16197244137. I will call BMW and see what they will do - I've done that before without success on other issues but it's worth a try. FWIW I do think this dealer (sioux falls bmw) is honest but I also don't think they have lots of experience with this sort of problem. And unfortunately we don't have a good independent that I know of. I've lived here a year - we had good independents where I lived before north of seattle. If any of you know of one let me know. And also this is my only vehicle and I don't have a garage right now so taking it apart is not really an option. Thanks again.

Yep, that's the pump I referenced. Sits on top of the scr tank. Bosch units (OES) run about $350. So not as bad as anticipated. An Indy could save you hundreds on the job as you are not in a position to repair yourself. Hopefully someone can suggest a good one in your area.
Ard, you might be able to getthe pump off in situ with a lot of swearing and time. But, having just done it, I'd removethe tank for servicing.

wait... isnt the part number he supplied the pump on the PASSIVE tank? (Not the active tank as dealer describes?)
Also, OP, if you google "BMW Code 4804" you will find quite a bit of info. As I recall the SCR pump is a covered component in the CA warranty (8/80). If you are in a state that follows CA... (i know, I know...) |

I believe that tank is the active tank. And the part number provided is the pump that sits on top of it.
Ditto finding out of that fault is covered under the extended 10yr/120k warranty, though not sure if the pump is covered, just the tank (sensors, etc). Will save a lot of money. Probably not time though considering how dealerships like to drag their feet, rake you over the coals, etc when dealing with not taking money directly from the customer. It's why I use them as little as possible. But if the pump ends up not fixing the issue (code is pressure related, not explicit to the SCR pump module)... it would be nice to have the dealer responsible for the mis-diagnosis.

The number he supplied is for a 2014 to 2018, near as I can tell. for an F15 model
So go figure. Time to stop confusing the issue until OP has accurate info from his dealer SCR pump on an E70 diesel should be 16197244137 |
