If your X has the hardrive set-up that can use a thumb drive in the USB port to upload new map data...there are multiple ways to do this. Some free and some are "for pay"...it depends on your abilities and comfort level.

I bet if you do a simple google search with a few keywords...you can find the multiple threads/links to download the latest maps to a thumbdrive (you'll need some tech savvy to do this)...or you can go to one of the multiple vendors that will allow you to download the latest maps (for a fee)...but again, you'll need some tech savvy...or just pay for them to send you a thumbdrive with the data ready to upload. Then there's always your local BMW dealership...but be prepared when you hear the price.

Again, if you can upload though a thumb drive...you'll need a FSC code (forgot what the acronym stands for)...but map updates will not occur without the FSC code. You can buy a one-time code..or buy a life-time code.

Doing a quick google search...I found these two "pay-for-it" sites just typing BMW nav update into the search box:
  1. https://bimmeramerica.com/coding/bmw...ion-map-update
  2. https://bimmernaviupdate.com/navigation-maps/bmw/

And by typing "bmw map update download" into a google search box...I found lots of links that will give you info about how to find free maps and download them yourself .

1. Living your onine life through a phone will result in you missing a ton of info. You *think* you are demanding people and companies serve you info and products as YOU want it. But you are simply getting only a fraction.

2. smassey posted a link above with precisely the info you need for fsc codes, for maps, for free. But you didnt see it, right? peering at that small screen you barely see the last post in this ONE thread. You dont realize now, 10 + years in, there are tons of posts here- on bimmerfest- on e90 forums- on many sites.

3. Just because the car is new to you, doesnt mean 100 people havent asked the same thing.

And this isnt (only) a crabby oldtimer saying 'do a search'. You are simply missing large amounts of info. Even if Qsilver () regurgitates some of it for you.

4. Did you know there is a navigation forum here? https://xoutpost.com/electronics/navigation-system/

Again, Im suggesting this to help you- opening pages, cross referencing...reading and digesting...bookmarking.... just MHO

I understood the Nav/Radio system in my 4.8is pretty well, as I retrofitted the Nav system in an e53 that was originally delivered without one. Now I am in need of getting European maps for my '09. I ordered a set of DVDs as I have a CCC system.

However, technology for the entertainment systems in e70s and beyond seems to have accelerated and it took me quite a few clicks, mostly not on this site, to figure out what I have and what the update method is. Without some serious scouting on Google this is a somewhat bewildering topic.

One page I found showed the different home screens for different systems which was an excellent starting point for understanding better what I was looking at.

Knowing what you already have can be helpful in getting correct suggestions/answers/etc. Between 2009-2011 the navigation systems were changing from disc versions to hardrive versions...so that info needs to be made clear for us to help you better.

You'll need to provide more information. Do you have an existing DVD map disc? If yes, get the 11 digit BMW part number that should be on the disc's label...then type "BMW xx xx x xxx xxx" into a google, eBay, or AMazon.com search box to find the correct map discs. Make sure the part number is compatible...because the e53 and other models prior to the e70 used DVD map discs that were similar but incompatible. If you shop using the correct 11 digit BMW part number...you can cut down on ordering/buying the wrong part.

If you have an owners manual...that could also help show you were the USB interface is located for updating data (not music files). Look in the back index for either USB or glove box. That might help you determine if your 2010 X5 has the USB data interface in the glovebox or not. Again, if you have Nav discs in your DVD drive or in the owners manual binder...then that is what you need vs upgrading software through a USB stick.

BTW...if you do use DVD discs...they may no longer be available. For example, my 2006 e53 X5 uses a DVD map...and the last iteration disc was 2015...BMW no longer supports the e53 nav systems.
I am having trouble even getting the Nav to work, I also did not get a owners packet, I ordered one off ebay, but it was incomplete.

You might not have a 'old maps' issue.....

I wonder if early 2010's were still CCC? Was there a navigation disk in the slot?
What's the build date for the 2010?
Confirm you have the CIC and SA609, Professional Navigation.
Enter the Service Menu and see how many satellites the Nav can see.

For those wondering about the different Systems (CCC thru the latest MGU ID7)...perhaps the info below will help wade through the multiple changes. You can see the changed by:
  1. Year
  2. Interface
  3. Differences
