35d oil leak from filter housing

Ive noticed a steady leak coming from my oil filter housing. I use mahle filters but it dosent seem right to be leaking. It appears to be coming from the point of sealing when tightened close, i know this is common with n54 motors but have yet to see any info on the diesels

The large O ring is supposed to be in a grove in the cap that keeps it inside the housing. Bit it's pretty easy for the O ring to slip out of its grove and end up at the top of the threads between the housing and the cap.

The o-ring can be replaced every time the filter is changed as the filter comes with a new one. I use a tiny amount of fresh oil on the o-ring also.

Overtightening can crack the plastic lid. I think they have a torque spec but in both my M5 and the X5d, they just stop turning.

I always use the new ring provided with a dab of oil of the finger to lubricate the new ring, opened the filter early today and the ring was seated properly. Was tightened fairly tight nothing appears cracked on the cap. Still guessing, im going to wash the area and look for leaks closely

Tightened "fairly tight" is probably too tight...

This is the biggest issue I see when folks change the oil on these types of filter housings. They crank it down, then crack the housing, or deform it slightly...

If it was tight enough to be "fairly tight", I'd 1st try tightening it to just snug (like it's supposed to be). The seal is what is supposed to provide the seal. Tightening down the filter housing tight does not make the seal, seal better... There's absolutely zero reason to tighten the filter housing down to more than just snug.

I believe the oil filter housing calls for torquing to 25nm. That is what I follow and it makes it snug but not tight.
